Ask A Stage Goddess - How Do I Get Into Voice Overs?

Another job that you may want to consider as an actor is voice overs. You hear them all day, every day. On television, on the radio, at the movies, on DVD’s, video games, audio books and even your telephone. There’s a lot of money to be made in this segment of the entertainment industry. The work falls into several categories: movie trailers, promos, narration, animation, commercials, announcers and dialogue to name a few.

The perks for some voice actors is that you don’t have to dress up, wear make-up or memorize lines. You don’t have to spend hours and hours on set yet you receive residuals just like the on camera talent and…with today’s technology, you don’t even have to leave the house! People have home studios where they are able to audition and record the actual job in a room or sometimes a closet.  That may sound funny, but until you have enough space and money to build a professional booth, a closet is the perfect place to record. The clothes muffle the sound so it sounds more like a studio than a tunnel.

You will need a voice over demo for each category and eventually an agent, but there are ways to find work and self submit in the meantime.

Good luck!

Start to pay attention to how voice overs play a part in your daily life.

  1. You've got some great food for thought here. I like your question about how voiceovers appear in our every day lives. That's the little voice in our head that never stops - lol.
