Ask A Stage Goddess - Why Do I Need A Mentor?

Ultimate Blog Challenge - Day 7

Having a mentor can give you an edge that differentiates you from your peers and/or your competition. A mentor can help shorten your learning curve, open your mind to new ideas & possibilities, identify opportunities and advise on how to promote yourself.  They would be a person who believes in you and as a result a lot of people have gone further than they thought they could because someone else thought they could.

In this day and age a mentor doesn’t necessarily have to be someone you know or who is even alive. You can read books on your mentor of choice or follow someone on the internet to get a feel for who they are and how they conduct their business.

I have two mentors that I have never met but I am a faithful follower of their work. I met them on an online coaching program and began to absorb their message like a sponge. I follow them on twitter, read & advocate their bestselling book, and participate in their private facebook page. After awhile we started to communicate privately and have now had a couple of phone conversations. We plan to meet sometime this year when I go to New York.

I’ve decided that I would also like Lee Daniels to be my mentor. I’m fascinated by the fact that he wears pajamas while directing his films. Some say he does that because of something about “birthing his projects”.  I read another article that said he started wearing his PJs when he had no clean clothes to wear to work.  I actually saw him wearing pajama bottoms with a sweater at a Gladys Knight concert. Either way, it’s just quirky enough to get my attention. Being directed by someone in that outfit everyday could definitely make me feel free enough to go all out in exploring whatever character I was portraying at the time.

If you could choose anyone in the world, who would be your mentor?
